Whey Protein Powder and Water Supplements

Reading Time: 2 minutes

There is so much poor quality whey protein powder and water out there; we wanted to give you our recommendations for the Best Whey Protein.  Here are the brand we recommend:

  • Ion-X Protein Water

These brand are tested to ensure low levels of contaminants and have not been treated with high heat, which are very important when looking for a good Whey Protein powder and water Supplement. The Ion-X brand is pure whey protein, and contains additional, high quality ingredients that may be beneficial for your health.

Best Whey Protein:

protein powder and water

A lot of so-called “experts” recommend whey protein isolates as the best whey protein, but we believe in keeping nutritional supplements as natural as possible.  That’s why we think it’s better for your to consume your whey protein powder and water as a concentrate rather than an isolate.  The concentrate still contains the fat and other important parts of the whey that help to boost immune function, like phosphatidylserine.  In addition, without the fat, your body has a harder time assimilating the protein in the whey.

In addition, most whey protein isolate is exposed to acid processing, and that is not good.  More information can be found on our Whey Protein Isolate Page.

Whey Protein powder and water Should Be Cold Processed with No Denatured or Damaged Protein

If you are looking for the best whey protein, the whey supplement you choose should be cold-processed, as heat can damage the micronutrients that boost the immune system, as well as the amino acids.  This denatures the proteins and makes some of the nutrients totally unavailable to your body. That is a waste of money and calories at best, and at worst is adding toxins to your body!

Best Whey Protein:  Grass Fed Cows & No Hormones

The best whey protein is grass fed with no hormones. Grass and pasture plants are a cow’s natural diet, and those dairy cows out eating pasture will produce milk and hence whey of a higher quality.  There are many webpages that discuss rBGH and I won’t get into the pros and cons here, but suffice it to say that this hormone is not natural, and has been implicated in many serious health concerns including cancer, and we recommend using whey protein powder and water from rBGH-free cows.

Best Whey Protein:  High Quality Ingredients in Addition to the Whey

Many companies add ingredients in addition to the whey protein, and there is nothing wrong with that, but if you are looking for the best whey protein, just make sure that they are natural, wholesome additions.  Some that can be beneficial to your health include coconut oil and medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) and lecithin, preferably from sunflower seeds rather than soy which is often GMO.

Supplements Boost the Power of Protein

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In the media, we often see controversy in the world of sports when an athlete is found to be using a supplement that is not permitted for use within the professional sporting community.  This is frequently due to the fact that the individual is using a banned or illegal performance enhancer, which can at times be compared to that of illegal steroids. Natural supplements, however, such as that of whey protein water, glutamine and so forth are not banned from being used and have become increasingly popular amongst professional and amateur athletes and professionals alike.

The use and variety of protein has become and continues to increase in popularity in terms of sport and supplements according to a PR Log press release. Whey Protein Water Function and Muscle Building Process

The sport and supplements, going hand in hand provide a range of protein water products which include inter alia whey protein, casein, soy and egg proteins, all of which have been linked to providing an effective protein source for athletes, body builders, and fitness enthusiasts.

Within the so called standard protein powder drinks products, there are some prefer small amounts of additional elements contained.

Oak Park Pool Cleaning services are top notch, and they know their work very well. So, making the proper investment can not only ensure a clean and sparkly pool but also save you a lot of time and hassle.

Why Cleaning Your Pool is a Necessity

Enjoying a swim in your pool might be very tempting for you, but the thought of cleaning the swimming pool and getting rid of the gunk may be quite daunting. Hygiene maintenance is essential while using a swimming pool and it could be the source of various water-borne infections if not cleaned on a timely basis.

Yes, adding chemicals like chlorine may help but it is very temporary, and for a more permanent approach, you need to seek professional help. Scrubbing of the pool is as crucial as disinfection, so seek for help if you can’t handle it by yourself.

Mold is one of the most common growths which can happen on the walls of the swimming pool along with various other microorganisms which can be very toxic to health. You could opt for DIY options and devices to clean the pool. But, again, this is not a permanent solution.

DIY Pool Cleaning

It might not be possible for you to always seek professional help, and under such circumstances, you could use DIY methods to clean your pool or at-least maintain it till your next deep cleaning session. There are various cleaners which do this job, and each has specific functions. Here is a list of some of them.

  • Robotic Pool Cleaners: This is more of a modern day innovative approach, and these robots are designed to clean and scrub the pool walls and floor.
  • Manual Pool Cleaners: Chemicals, water nets, pool poles, floor sweepers, etc. could be used for larger sized pools or even small ones.
  • Solar Powered Pool Cleaners: The power of these cleaners are drawn from solar energy; hence they are not only bio-friendly, but they also run on the surface of the water to collect leaves and other debris.
  • Suction and Pressure Pool Cleaners: Another method to get rid of debris and leaves, especially if your pool lies in between trees.

The Need for Professional Pool Care

Even though all the options mentioned above are great for maintaining your swimming pool, deep cleaning cannot be achieved until you seek for real help. Oak Park has very proficient professional swimming pool cleaners who will help you with your job, and they also work under contracts. This ensures convenient cleaning and records maintenance, cleaning the pool at least four times a month.

Cleaning pool involves cleaning of the catch baskets and filter cartridges. It also consists of testing chemical levels of the water.  This is possible only by a professional who has been certified by the Health Department.

  • Cleaning the Catch Basket: This is present in every swimming pool, and it helps in catching dust, debris, leaves and other waste products. It needs to be cleaned to make sure that the drain does not overflow.
  • Cleaning and Changing the Filters: Not cleaning pool filters for a long period can lead to jamming or breaking due to too much dirt. Cleaning the filters regularly ensures its safety.
  • Avoid the spread of infections: E. Coli is one of the most common bacteria seen in a stagnant water body like a swimming pool, and this can be eradicated by maintaining a proper chemical and pH balance of the pool. This obviously cannot be done alone, so professional help is imperative.

Which Service Suits You The Best?

With the vast lists of companies in Oak Park, it may get difficult to choose from. You need to keep in mind a few factors before making your decision, and we hope to help you in this process.

  • Professional Attitude: The pool cleaner should not only be punctual, but he should also follow all necessary guidelines and the best and modern pool cleaning techniques for your pool.
  • Offer a Wide Variety of Packages: To perfectly fit all your specifications, the packages for hiring a cleaner should be flexible. Make sure that all the necessary steps of the cleaning process are carried out in the package you choose and helps you in keeping your swimming pool clean and shining.
  • Reliability: Since you will be voluntarily allowing an unknown person in your house, you should make sure that the company and the technician, both are trustworthy and very reliable. Since the cleaner will be working alone for a few hours, be careful to keep an eye on them.
  • Licensing and Liability Insurance: The company you would choose should have the provision of liability insurance as well as proper licensing and certification by the Health Department. The hardware they use for the job should also be top of the line.

The Role of Adrenal Fatigue in Estrogen Hormone Dominance

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Estrogen Hormone Reduction Protocol

Strictly speaking, all of us, men and women alike, suffer from estrogen hormone dominance. There simply is so much of it around and it is impossible to fully escape its impact. Plastics, car exhaust, meats, soaps, carpet, furniture, and paneling are just some of the examples. You may have on-and-off sinus problems, headaches, dry eyes, asthma, cold hands, and feet, and may not attribute them to your exposure to xenoestrogen. Over time, the exposure can cause more chronic problems such as arthritis, and gallbladder disease.

While a definitive diagnosis can be made through a thorough history and physical examination, together with laboratory tests of estrogens and progesterone levels, this is seldom done. Instead, synthetic estrogen such as Premarin, or combination synthetic estrogen and synthetic progesterone (such as Pempro) are often passed out on the premise that symptoms presented are due to estrogen deficiency without any consideration for the progesterone part of the equation. In reality, many are suffering from relative estrogen dominance.

This naturally oriented protocol is designed to reduced the body’s estrogen hormone load and prevent the onset of cancer. If you already have been diagnosed with cancer, more aggressive action will be needed including all these steps.

While addressing an estrogen hormone reduction protocol, it is also good to understand the role of the NeuroEndoMetabolic (NEM) Stress responses. This is how hormones, neurotransmitters, and our metabolism and detoxification all interact to keep balances in the body. When the estrogen hormone dominates, our estrogen hormone production decreases, and detoxification to clear the excess estrogen hormone increases. This all has implications in how to treat estrogen hormone dominance, which you will read about in this article. The NEM response is how the body all interacts together to maintain health. A hormone imbalance creates an imbalance in the NEM response, which causes issues with the breakdown of certain hormones, and the cleansing of hormones, specifically estrogen, from the body.

1. Natural Progesterone

The typical domino effect of estrogen hormone dominance starts with proliferation of estrogen-sensitive cells, leading to overgrowth of endometrial lining, to PMS, to PCOS, to uterine fibroid, to hysterectomy, to severe iatrogenic (doctor-caused) hormonal imbalance (when estrogen is given alone with opposing progesterone), to misguided medication for depression and anxiety, to bone loss and reduced libido. These all can be reduced if the amount of estrogen in the body is normalized by administration of natural progesterone as a balancer.

Natural progesterone is, therefore, a cornerstone of estrogen hormone reduction therapy. It helps to reduce the risk of ovarian, endometrial and breast cancers, while unopposed estradiol causes that is frequently associated with fibrocystic breast disease, endometriosis, PMS, fibroids, and breast cancer. If you have symptoms of estrogen hormone dominance but have not been diagnosed with estrogen hormone-related cancer, natural progesterone will still be valuable for its cancer prevention properties. Specific dosage varies depending on the condition. Baseline saliva testing of estrogen, progesterone, and their respective ratios should be undertaken. The body normally produces 20 mg of progesterone a day. Replacement of this physiological amount in natural cream form is suggested in most cases. There is a tremendous variation in the amount that should be taken for optimum effectiveness. It is recommended that you consult a naturally oriented physician prior to treatment.

2. Dietary Adjustments

Overeating and under-exercising are the norms in developed countries. Populations from such countries, especially in the Western hemisphere, derive a large part of their dietary calorie from fat. They also show a much higher incidence of menopausal symptoms. Studies have shown that the estrogen hormone level fell in women who switched from a typical high-fat, refined-carbohydrate diet to a low-fat, high-fiber, plant-based diet even though they did not adjust their total calorie intake. Plants contain over 5,000 known sterols that have progesterone side effectsCultures whose eating habits are more wholesome and who exercise more have a far lower incidence of menopausal symptoms because their pre and postmenopausal levels of the estrogen hormone do not drop as significantly.

In non-industrialized societies not subjected to environmental estrogen hormone insults, progesterone deficiency is rare. During menopause, sufficient progestogenic substances are circulating in the body to keep the sex drive unabated, bones strong, and passage through menopause symptom-free.

Some years back, scientists discovered that unfermented soy and various cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, bok choy, and brussels sprouts contain a high level of phyto-estrogen. These compounds’ chemical structure resembles the estrogen hormone but is many times weaker in potency. Women consuming these vegetables reported some relief of menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. The prevailing wisdom is that women in menopause lack the estrogen hormone, and phyto-estrogen replenish the body with estrogen. Soy and cruciferous vegetables are heavily promoted.

It is now known that these vegetables work by competitively occupying the estrogen hormone receptor sites on the cell membrane to prevent internal estrogen from exerting its effects on the cell. Those who have an estrogen hormone dominance may, therefore, experience relief of symptoms as phyto-estrogen is many times weaker than the estrogen hormone in our body.

While phyto-estrogen may work and relieve symptoms, the long-term effect is probably undesirable because the estrogen hormone receptor sites are still occupied, although by the less potent phyto-estrogen. Overconsumption of phyto-estrogenic food such as unfermented soy and cruciferous vegetables on a long-term basis may actually not reduce the risk of estrogen hormone dominance significantly. It’s akin to replacing one potent devil with a lesser potent one. It is far more beneficial to get rid of the estrogen hormone from the receptor sites and replace them with progesterone. Estrogen load will, therefore, reduce significantly and the risk of estrogenic diseases such as breast cancer will be less.

Furthermore, phyto-estrogen have been shown to inhibit the conversion of T4 to the active T3 thyroid hormone, and can trigger hypothyroidism.

Women with estrogen dominance should only take unfermented soy such as tofu and cruciferous vegetables in moderation. Those with a history of thyroid imbalance should refrain from such vegetables.

A plant-based unprocessed whole-food diet is recommended. At least 15 grams of fiber should be consumed a day. Avoid high-glycemic foods such as refined sugar. Avoid alcohol or drugs that can damage the liver which will lead to an increase in estrogen due to the lack of estrogen breakdown. Caffeine intake from all sources is linked with higher estrogen hormone levels regardless of age, body mass index (BMI), caloric intake, smoking, and alcohol and cholesterol intake.

The Mediterranean Diet

Reading Time: 8 minutes

The evidence supporting the beneficial health effects of the Mediterranean diet seems to just keep growing. Every day it seems like there is at least one new article or study that covers this diet and its apparent health benefits. Perhaps, not surprisingly, two more studies were recently published that shed some light on a few more of the lesser known benefits of this diet. These two studies have been added to a long history of promising evidence in support of this diet, which will be discussed later. In fact, the U.S. News and World Report recently awarded this diet as the Best Diet of 2018.

But, is this diet truly worth all the hype, or is it yet another health fad? Can this diet help support a healthy NeruEndoMetabolic (NEM) stress response? Can it help prevent Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome (AFS)?

What is the Mediterranean Diet?

This diet isn’t actually a “diet” for much of the world. It is simply the native diet of the Mediterranean countries. It is very similar to the diets that many of our recent ancestors used to eat. This seemingly foreign diet was only recently overshadowed by the industrial revolution, which promoted fast, easy meals over quality and nutritive values.

Unlike most other diets, the Mediterranean diet is loosely structured, perhaps this is one of several causes for its rising popularity. All in all, it is a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, nuts whole grains, lean animal protein, and of course olive oil. It is also a diet which is low in red meats and saturated fats in general. Processed foods and refined sugars are also to be avoided in this diet.

This diet is far from the only diet that recommends limiting processed foods. In fact, most, if not all modern science strongly suggests processed foods are detrimental to the body. Avoiding processed foods is crucial to keeping a balanced NEM stress response and avoiding chronic stress. This is largely due to the stress the body endures when digesting these unnatural foods.

This diet’s rise to fame is, in some ways, a product of the slow food movement; a movement which encourages home cooking, family meals, and of course avoiding fast food. In this Mediterranean diet, sitting down for family, and group meals, in general, are strongly encouraged. This type of social eating not only encourages social activity, but also slows down your eating, giving you more time to chew your food, and allows for easier digestion, as words are exchanged in between bites.

Perhaps one of the biggest causes for its popularity, the Mediterranean diet allows for alcohol in moderation. How many diets let you do that? Traditionally, consumption is limited to wine with meals, but who can’t live with that?

Surprisingly, this seemingly cutting-edge diet isn’t actually that cutting edge. It is based on the traditional diets of the Mediterranean, namely Italy and Spain. This modern craze is really just the way that many of our grand, and great-grandparents used to eat before the industrial revolution, which caused an abundance of processed, easy to access food.

Why Is the Diet So Good?

A man enjoying Mediterranean dietYou have likely heard about the amazing benefits that appear to come from this diet in an article or from a study. Among the most popular of these benefits are; reduced risk for diabetes, kidney disease, breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, only to name a few. It also appears that this fast spreading diet can support a healthy NEM system for several reasons which we will be sure to cover later.

Many of the studies conducted on the diet have risen from observational studies, and do not quite give us a whole picture of how the diet directly affects the body. But due to its prominent use of mostly plant-based foods, it is not too surprising that many benefits would arise from this diet. Many of the foods in this diet contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties; both of these factors have long been known to be important for a healthy diet.

Though the evidence supporting the diet itself is largely observational, many facets that it incorporates have been proven with stronger evidence. For example, the prominent use of raw whole foods, many of which have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and regenerative properties.

What Does the Research Say?

Some research even suggests that a diet rich in Mediterranean cuisine may help alleviate acid reflux, reduce cholesterol and perhaps most importantly extend lifespan. Although the diet is not actually low in fat, it has been proven to help people lose weight, even if they do not keep track of calories. That is quite exciting if you ask me!

According to a recent study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, researchers found that elders who closely follow the Mediterranean diet were least likely to become frail. This study took place over a 4 year period, and many elderly people followed the loose structure of this diet.

The Journal of Urology published a study in which men who followed a diet rich in fish and olive oil, and low in juice, seemed to reduce their risk for aggressive prostate cancer. The Mediterranean diet is rich in olive oil and fish, meaning that this diet would likely have very similar effects.

How Does This Diet Impact the NEM System?

What is the NEM system?

The NeuroEndoMetabolic (NEM) stress response system is a way of seeing the finely balanced systems of the body, and how they function together. The NEM system is a visual lens through which to see functions in the body that would otherwise be invisible. The NEM is made up of six circuits being inflammation, metabolic, detoxification, hormonal, cardiotoxic, and euro effect. In a healthy body, we would expect to see the six circuits working in balanced unison to create the ideal environment for a healthy life.

However, when one or more of these systems begin to function improperly, the body will experience negative effects. One major effect of an unbalanced NEM system is Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome (AFS). The major cause of AFS is stress Stress can be brought to the body by a variety of means. Two of the biggest cause of stress may be lack of exercise and poor diet.

The Mediterranean lifestyle and the NEM system

A woman with a healthy NEM system, supported by Mediterranean dietDue to the stress brought on by the standard Western diet from various aspects, we should look to healthier, whole food based approaches to diet. The Mediterranean diet appears to support a healthy NEM system. Not only is this diet closely related to the diets of our ancestors, it also supports social eating which is a concept most of us have lost touch with.

A diet rich in whole foods allows for easier digestion and a more nutrient-dense meal. Both of these factors reduce the number of digestive actions needed to be taken by the body. Reducing these actions, in the long term, may allow the body to get more energy. This is essential to maintaining the long-term health of the human body.

On the other hand, processed foods can cause chemical imbalances in the body. For example, many processed foods are high in sugar; too much sugar at once causes a large increase in blood sugar levels. If this occurs too many times, it can lead to diseases like diabetes, as well as stress and an imbalance in the metabolic circuit of the NEM stress response. Not only are processed foods high in sugar, but often low in essential vitamins and minerals. Your body has to work harder to digest processed foods, and in the end, receives less for its hard work. Diets such as the Mediterranean are beneficial for long-term health and a balanced NEM system. One of the biggest reasons is that your body has to work less, and gets more in turn.

There are many other studies on the diet which shows its promise as a healthy alternative to the standard western diet. Many of the reasons for the healing benefits of the diet will become more apparent when you learn a bit more about how to practice it.

How to Practice This Fast Growing Diet

9 Daily Servings of Fresh Fruits and Veggies

If you want to begin incorporating the Mediterranean diet into your life, you can start by adding fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Try to aim for nine servings of fruits and vegetables every day. And remember olive oil and wine do not count as servings, I’m sorry to disappoint you.

As part of achieving those nine servings a day, start by including a few cups of leafy greens every week then add some more color like red, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables that will increase the phytonutrients and other important vitamins and minerals. Fruits and vegetables provide plenty of vitamins and minerals to help your body and adrenals heal.

If you do not want to follow the Mediterranean meal plan so strictly, even just starting with this step has the potential to improve your health. While fresh fruit and vegetables are great, keep in mind that fruit in the morning may spike your blood sugar leading to reactive hypoglycemia. Also, raw vegetables take more energy to process, and may not be recommended in someone with advanced adrenal fatigue.

Limit Healthy Fats

Healthy fats in Mediterranean dietLegumes and nuts are important components of the diet. Mix them in with cereals or salads, or spread almond or peanut butter on your whole grain bread. Raw or roasted nuts and legumes make a great addition to a healthy diet. However, remember nuts are high in calories and fat, so limit consumption to half a cup a day.

Use a similar approach to limit the consumption of healthy fats in general. Of course, for most people, olive oil makes a healthy alternative to margarine or butter. However, you have to maintain a healthy level of use as healthier doesn’t mean all-you-can-eat. Another example of a healthy fat that should not be over-eaten would be avocado. We know it may be healthy, but we often forget to consume in moderation.

In adrenal fatigue, healthy fats may be beneficial as they provide long-lasting energy to your body.

Animal Protein

If consuming animal protein is part of your diet, opt for lean options. Go for chicken and fish over heavier red meats like beef, or pork. Additionally, eggs, cheese, and yogurt are a typical part of this renowned diet.

Bread and Pasta

Unlike many modern diets, the Mediterranean diet does allow bread and pasta. However, it is important to choose whole grain and whole wheat options rather than white, or refined grains. Choosing whole grain provides more fiber and nutrients, and can cause you to feel full faster. Much like healthy fats, limit consumption of bread and pasta.

Whole Foods

The main concept of the Mediterranean cuisine is consuming more whole foods. Avoid processed foods such as those that come in bags and boxes. Though they may be widely available at the grocery store, they are largely lacking in nutrition overall. Shop for foods as close to their natural form as possible. Every step of processing foods for shelf stability removes essential nutrients and vitamins that can only be found in the whole food form.

Social Eating

Social eating and Mediterranean dietThough there is no strict schedule associated with the diet, social eating is greatly encouraged. When possible, at least once a day sit down with friends or family for a full meal. This is one of the biggest concepts that has been lost in the eating habits of modern society. In the constant need to get from one place to the other, we forget the most basic and fundamental human enjoyments such as sitting down for a delicious meal with our friends and family.

Though this diet is quickly spreading in popularity, it is largely about taking time to enjoy the simple things, which involves slowing down. Socializing is a basic human need that we often ignore. Socializing may limit stress by helping us not feel so alone in the world, and having someone to share our life with. Limiting stress as you likely know, is essential to avoiding AFS.

Though no diet is right for everyone, it is likely that at least there are aspects of the Mediterranean diet we should all consider adding to our lives.

Silence Therapy: The New Wellness Approach

Reading Time: 7 minutes

How much is ‘noise versus silence’ an issue in your daily life? If you’re like most Americans, you’re surrounded by some kind of sound everywhere you turn: cell phones, computers, electronic games of all kinds, music blasting from iPods, the booming of someone’s bass turned up loud as it will go in the car next to you. People have tried to get away from this barrage of sound and noise for many years. Now, the latest movement in the wellness industry is silence therapy. Folks from big-name entertainers to common people are seeking ways to shut off the noise and retreat, sometimes literally, from being bombarded over and over again.

But is there any kind of scientific evidence to back up claims of silence therapy gurus that this actually works to your benefit? To answer this question, we have to examine first the impact of noise on our bodies and minds.

An Introduction to Noise

Some significant research has gone into showing the negative effects of noise on people’s physical and psychological well-being. The results have been surprising in some ways, reinforcing what we already know in others.

Noise is measured in decibels. Some people are much more sensitive to noise than this summary would suggest:

  • Fifty decibels – Annoyance begins at a level of approximately 50 decibels in the daytime. This is the level of noise in a fairly quiet residential area.
  • Seventy decibels is more than twice the level of noise than 50. This is the level of noise of a vacuum cleaner in your home. An increase of ten decibels equals about a doubling of the noise level.
  • At 80 decibels, you have the risk of damage to your hearing after eight hours of exposure. This is the level of sound of a garbage disposal in your kitchen or the passing of a freight train at about 15 yards.
  • One hundred decibels is the equivalent of a motorcycle or jackhammer. After eight hours of exposure to this level of noise, you could have serious hearing damage.
  • Over 130 decibels, or the level of noise produced by a military aircraft take-off from an aircraft carrier, you experience pain in your ears. This is approximately 64 times as loud as that of a vacuum cleaner mentioned above.

Not many of us are exposed to the kind of noise over 130 decibels, but the exposure we have from day to day activities and the overall noise in our environment adds up. Many (if not most) people eventually have some hearing loss due to the noisy environment in which they live.

Negative Effects of Noise

Noise is not something you can ignore. If you don’t like something you see, look somewhere else or close your eyes. It’s no longer a problem. If you put something in your mouth that doesn’t taste good, you can spit it out and never order that again.

But what can you do about constant, never-ending noise? Of course, you could buy noise-canceling headphones (if you can afford them), but do you want to go through life wearing headphones every day, all day?

The physiology of noise is such that we humans attend to it even in deep sleep. Movement of the tiny bones of the ear is transmitted to the cochlea, a snail-shaped formation inside the ear. This structure converts the movement into electrical signals that go first to the amygdala. This brain structure has a lot to do with memory and emotion. As soon as the amygdala is stimulated by sound, it produces cortisol, the stress-fighting hormone, along with other hormones. Essentially, the amygdala responds to loud sounds as a stressor. Because of this, people who live in noisy environments are constantly under stress from that noise.

Silence therapy and the brainNoise, therefore, even at levels below those corresponding to potential damage to hearing, is treated as a danger signal by the brain, even as we sleep. So the body responds with the familiar flight or fight response that occurs with exposure to any stressor.

Some fairly recent research suggested even music, regardless of the type, led to a state of arousal in subjects. This arousal could be measured by changes in the bloodstream and in the circulation of blood to the brain. Even “restful” music led to this arousal state.

The European Heart Journal reported an interesting and alarming study that showed both men and women are more likely to have a higher risk of heart attack when exposed to prolonged noise. Men’s risk increased by 50 percent, while women’s risk increased by an incredible 300 percent!

Reasons for this dramatic increase were said to be the production of stress hormones such as cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline in noisy environments. Increased levels of these stress hormones have been linked closely to heart failure, strokes, high blood pressure, and immune issues.

How prevalent is the detrimental effect of noise? In 2001, an estimate was given that up to 12.5 percent of American children between the ages of 6 and 19 years suffered from hearing impairment in one or both ears. Why this damage? Up to 80 percent of school children have personal music players going for long periods of time at significant levels. Regardless of warnings by the manufacturers of these products, there is little if any regulation of this kind of damaging noise. Even from parents.

While temporary exposure to noise at harmful levels can be reversed, the long-term effect of such exposure may not be reversible.

Relationship of Noise and Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome (AFS)

With the knowledge of how noise is interpreted by the brain as a stressor, it is relatively easy to see the relationship between noise and AFS. Regardless of the source of the stress, our bodies respond in the same way every time.

Symptoms of Excessive Noise on the Adrenals

Comments like these are common among those with AFS when exposed to excessive noise:

  • I attended a concert and could not fall asleep for days after.
  • The phone rings and I get nervous.
  • Exposure to the sounds at a crowded shopping center makes me tired.
  • I cannot handle the noise from my neighbors even though it is not excessive noise.
  • I live in an apartment and the road noise drives me nuts.
  • I cannot handle rock music of any kind. It gives me the jitters.

Those in advanced stages of AFS are particularly vulnerable to the unsettling effects of sound or noise. The weaker the adrenals, the greater the risk.

Remember that sound is energy in selected frequency. Excess frequency bombardment faced by our body trigger increased cellular movement and vibration at rest. Cortisol release from the adrenal glands is needed to neutralize and stabilize such disruption to normal cellular function. Excessive vibration at the cellular level caused by excessively loud sound also can lead to increased cellular metabolism and that in turn can lead to increased reactive metabolites from such metabolism.

A weak body may not be able to clear excess metabolites out of the body on a timely basis. This can lead to a state of reactive metabolite overload (RMO), and in severe cases a host of bodily reactions tied to reactive metabolite response. Liver congestion and extracellular matrix pollution may worsen.

Symptoms of excessive noise pollution and intolerance can include:

  • Startling effect
  • Increased fatigue
  • Adrenal crashes
  • Adrenaline rushes
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Heart palpitations
  • Increased yawning
  • Hypoglycemia episodes
  • A general sense of nervousness

Avoiding excessive exposure to noise and putting oneself in a quiet environment, therefore, can go a long way toward avoiding noise generative disruptions to a body already experiencing adrenal fatigue.

The NeuroEndoMetabolic (NEM) Model

Conventionally trained healthcare professionals tend to view illness from a symptom-focused standpoint. That is, they deal with individual symptoms of illness rather than the root cause of the symptoms.

Healthcare professionals, much of the time alternative and functional medicine professionals, who adopt the viewpoint of the NEM model look at illness conditions very differently. Rather than focus on symptoms, they look at organ systems in order to discover the root causes of symptoms. This more comprehensive outlook is a better way of remediating illness conditions.

How silence therapy affects the NEM model

The NEM model proposes a series of organ systems that operate in an interdependent way. What affects one system, affects others as well. So that, in the case of noise effects, the stimulation of the hormone response system leads to stimulation of the cardiotonic system. This is the system that has to do with the cardiovascular system.

Research indicates the hormones involved in noise stimulation also have an effect on the neuroaffective response system. This system deals with mental or emotional responses to stress. Depression, anxiety, and other mental/emotional responses result.

Evaluating illness conditions from this viewpoint leads to a more effective and efficient attempt at remediating the symptoms brought on by noise or any other source of stress.

Effects of Silence Therapy

People are willing to pay large amounts of money to retreat from their noisy environments and experience the benefits of silence therapy. These retreats may last from a few hours to a couple of months for the most staunch adherents to the concept of silence therapy.

But what does the science say about these benefits? There have been studies that suggest potentially great benefits.

One study from Duke University produced results that were unexpected, to say the least. The researchers were studying whether the calls of baby mice would produce more growth of brain cells in adults. Instead, the silence which was used as a control in the experiment actually stimulated more growth of brain cells. Two hours of daily silence prompted the growth of cells in the hippocampus, the brain structure involved in the formation of memory.

Other researchers have confirmed this finding. In addition, these other researchers also found silence to be the factor that allowed these cells to differentiate into functioning neurons. Thus, silence therapy can be beneficial to your brain functioning.

Still, other researchers discovered a completely different neuronal pathway in the auditory cortex that fires when silence begins. This pathway soon stops firing as the silence lengthens, also. This pathway is different from but similar to the one that fires when noise stimulation is heard. This second pathway also stops firing as noise continues.

While silence therapy apparently stimulates the development of cells in the hippocampal region of the brain, none of the noise stimuli do the same other than having a temporary neurological effect. This suggests the power of silence to be great article source.

The evidence is strong that silence therapy will decrease the production of stress hormones and thus decrease the risk of the brain interpreting it as a stressor. Reactive metabolite generation is also reduced as cellular metabolism is normalized instead of being put in a hyperactive mode.

Dental Health Issues and Adrenal Fatigue

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Everyone has heard dentists say that brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily will keep your teeth and gums healthy. But not everyone knows dental health issues can be a major contributor to all kinds of health problems, including Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome (AFS).

It’s important to understand how the health of your mouth affects the health of your body. For instance, did you know your mouth is a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria? Most of them are harmless or beneficial, but there are instances when harmful bacteria gain a significant foothold in your mouth and are able to cause some serious health problems.

Good oral hygiene typically keeps these harmful bacteria at bay. Also, saliva washes away food particles and the acid that harmful bacteria produce, keeping your mouth healthy.

But failing to brush or floss allows bacteria to grow and proliferate and gum disease and tooth decay to take hold. Some common medications will decrease the amount of saliva in your mouth, leading to a higher possibility of infections and diseases developing.

Some research evidence that suggests the inflammation and bacteria associated with periodontitis, a significant gum disease, can lead to serious illness conditions in other parts of your body. And some illness conditions, such as HIV/AIDS and diabetes, may reduce your body’s ability to fight infections, leading to more severe dental health issues.

Researchers at the North Carolina School of Dentistry studied links between gum disease and several serious health conditions such as heart disease, respiratory illness, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and osteoporosis. This research found that those with gum health conditions were two times more likely to die from heart attacks and three times more likely to suffer strokes.

Why does this common the dental health issue – inflammation of the gums – lead to such serious problems? Because the inflammation in your mouth allows bacteria to get into your bloodstream and spread to other parts of your body relatively easily.

Impact of Dental Health Issues on the Adrenals

With dental health issues impacting the rest of your body, they also impact your adrenals. Unresolved, unaddressed dental health issues become sources of stress for your body. And your body reacts to stress from any source in the same way.

Once stress is introduced into your body, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is activated. This begins the cascade of hormones and other biological chemicals that make up the stress response. At the end of this cascade are the adrenal glands. Their primary responsibility in the face of stress is to release cortisol, the stress fighting hormone, to deal with the effects of stress on your body. When stress continues, the adrenals can become fatigued, not able to release sufficient cortisol. This leads to the set of symptoms known as Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome (AFS). AFS is a major, under assessed, chronic illness.

The sources of stress from dental health issues that affect the adrenals include abscessed teeth, cracked or decayed teeth, subacute infections in root canals, improper removal of teeth that leaves a subacute infection where the teeth were, mercury fillings that leak into the body, and materials used in dental procedures that bring on sensitivities. One of the major sources of this kind of stress is gingivitis.

Dental health issues and mercury fillings

Mercury toxicity is a primary source of direct stress on the adrenals. It actively suppresses hormone output in the adrenals. This is a source of contention in the dental profession, with both advocates of the possibility that mercury fillings leach into the body and those who argue they are safe both very vocal about their beliefs.

The dental health issues, if unaddressed, lead to a dramatic increase in bacterial growth in the mouth. This overgrowth then can spread throughout the body, leading to increasing toxic load in the entire system. These toxins interfere with the functioning of the adrenal glands, as well as other gland systems in the body.

Research indicates more than 400 types of bacteria can be found in an unhealthy mouth. The toxins produced by these bacteria cause irritation of the gums and stimulate an inflammatory response. Inflammation is a stressor to your body and stimulates the adrenals to secrete cortisol to address the stress. Of course, this stress is added to the stress from various other sources that impinge on your body on a regular basis and adds to the burden placed on your adrenals, increasing the likelihood of developing AFS.

Dental Health Issues: Toxins

Toxins in the body make up one of the major sources of stress that affect the adrenal glands and often lead to AFS. An often overlooked source of toxins and one that is shrouded in controversy is the mercury found in common dental fillings.

Mercury was used in thermometers for quite a while until its toxicity became a problem. It’s a toxic heavy metal, found in nature, that is highly volatile. When exposed to air, it quickly becomes a vapor. If these vapors are inhaled, they invade body tissues very fast. Too much of the vapors can be deadly. The vapors kill cells outright, not merely damaging them.

Mercury has been used in dental fillings for years. Even the so-called “silver” fillings frequently used by dentists because of its malleability contain mercury. In fact, this type of filling is typically fifty percent mercury, thirty-five percent silver, fifteen percent tin, and some copper and zinc.

Some dentists believe there is no mercury vapor released by these fillings. However, research has since shown mercury vapor is released through sublimation. In this process, mercury goes from a solid form to vapor. If you have these kinds of fillings, you may be breathing mercury vapor. This takes the mercury vapor into the lungs where it is absorbed into the blood. It then is transported to the liver where it is methylated. In this form, it goes to the brain and spinal cord and is stored in the cells. This entire process only takes a few hours to complete.

Interestingly, when these fillings are removed from your mouth, they are considered hazardous material and have to be handled according to federal guidelines. The other metals included in fillings like these are also considered toxic to a certain degree.

Some of the most frequent results of the leaching of these toxins from your tooth fillings include:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Inflammatory conditions such as phlebitis, fibromyalgia, and irritable bowel syndrome
  • Low pain threshold
  • Some chronic neurological conditions

Create Your Salad with a Balanced Nutritional Value

Reading Time: 4 minutes

An interesting fact about preparing your salad is that you can get creative in your choice of ingredients to add in the recipe, develop your own formula and produce a unique taste. But, that can also be the challenging part as you create your salad. While you cannot fail to make a tasty salad, you may miss a vital point or two – the calorie count and/or your fitness goals. For example, if weight loss is your goal, going high on calorie is not going to help, which often happens when one goes about making a salad.

Here are the basic rules for making a perfect salad that supports your fitness goals.

1. Make It Colorful

Vegetables are great sources of vitamins and minerals. Since the nutrient profile of each vegetable varies from the other, include as many vegetables as possible to get all nutrients when you create your salad.

Green – Spinach, leafy greens, broccoli, cucumber, green cabbage, green beans, asparagus and, lettuce are some of the green vegetables. The nutrients in these vegetables include zinc, calcium, magnesium, potassium, protein, chlorophyll, vitamins A, C, D, E, K and B6, fiber, iron, copper, carotenoids, omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, phosphorus, and manganese.

Red – Beets, red onions, tomatoes, radishes, red cabbage and red potatoes are red vegetables. The nutrients in red vegetables include manganese, dietary fiber, vitamins A, B6, C, E and K, iron, copper, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, folate, potassium, and protein.

Blue And Purple – Eggplant, purple carrots, purple cabbage, purple potatoes and purple asparagus are some of the vegetables in blue and purple colors. The nutrients available in these vegetables include iron, copper, magnesium, calcium, dietary fiber, vitamins A, B1, B6, C and K, folate, protein, potassium, manganese.

White – Cauliflower, onions, potatoes, mushrooms, white corn and shallots. Nutrients available in white colored veggies include vitamins A, B6, C, K, iron, calcium, folate, protein, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, niacin, selenium, zinc, and manganese.

Add a minimum of three different colors of vegetables in your salad every day.

2. Add Power With Protein When You Create Your Salad

Adrenal Fatigue Treatment
Adrenal Fatigue Treatment

Veggies are a great source from which you can get your nutrients. However, plant proteins are not complete and hence to get your share of protein, you need something more in your salad. How about nuts? Tempting enough? Nuts are not all about taste as they are rich sources of nutrients and specific nuts are high in protein. Add almonds, peanuts, pistachios, walnuts, and cashews as toppings. Remember, nuts are great for heart health too. If you aren’t a vegetarian or vegan, you may add cooked egg, shrimp, sardines or chicken breast. Vegetarians and vegans can opt for chickpeas, kidney beans, black beans, other legumes, and tofu. Take care while adding nuts to your salad as they are high caloric. About a tablespoon of your choice nut/nuts will suffice.

3. Taste And Health Perfect Dressing

Oily dressing can be better for health than a creamy dressing. Olive oil is one of the best choices for a perfect salad dressing. Greek yogurt-based dressing for your salad is also ideal as it is rich in protein. Other healthy choices you can opt for as you create your salad include lemon vinaigrette salad dressing and sesame-ginger vinaigrette.

How Can a Perfect Salad Help Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome (AFS)?

AFS, one of the many health conditions wrongly assessed, can be effectively balanced with the right type of diet. AFS is a set of symptoms caused by poor functioning of adrenal glands. adrenal fatigue treatment includes fatigue, allergy, lethargy, pain in joints and mild depression. Yet another symptom is difficulty getting up in the mornings and having high levels of energy in the evenings. Since these symptoms can be assigned to certain other medical conditions as well, AFS often goes undiagnosed.

Having a perfectly planned balanced diet goes a long way in addressing AFS. To get nutrients to required levels, you can incorporate eating salad into your regular diet. To make it work best, create your salad customizing it to suit your needs and to be relieved from AFS.

Here is how a healthy salad helps to balance AFS:

  • Green leafy vegetable such as spinach and lettuce in the salad are rich sources of iron, vitamin C, fiber and magnesium, which promote the health of your body and mind.
  • Including protein-rich foods in your salad boost energy levels, which otherwise are low in those with AFS.
  • Nuts and olive oil added to your salad will support maintaining healthy fat levels thereby promoting adrenal function. Fats are a source of energy that can aid in curing mild depression.
  • Vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, and radishes help to maintain ph levels thereby neutralizing acidity, a common symptom in those with AFS.

Benefits of why you should create your salad

Fighting NEM Stress Response System With Healthy Salad

The NeuroEndoMetabolic (NEM) Stress Response is your body’s response to stress. When adrenal glands, which produce cortisol, a stress hormone, do not function at optimum levels, the overall stress response of your body, meaning the NEM stress response, weakens. By improving adrenal function with a balanced diet, you can improve NEM stress response.

To preserve your body’s stress response, you need to follow a perfect diet plan. When your NEM stress response is poor, it can result in symptoms including fatigue, low energy levels and insomnia develop. Create your salad to balance the symptoms as well as to improve adrenal function and your immunity thereby bringing your NEM stress response to function optimally.

While having a healthy salad greatly benefits your body and mind, some may experience an allergic reaction to certain ingredients. Hence, while you prepare your salad, ensure that you are not allergic to any ingredient that you prefer to add use this link

Many suffering from AFS may have poor digestive systems, it is also advisable not to mix fruits and vegetables to create your salad. It doesn’t have to be either an all-veggie salad or all-fruit salad. Of course, you can have your healthy share of nuts and seeds.

Adrenal Fatigue Treatment: What Are The Options?

Reading Time: 5 minutes

As those suffering from adrenal fatigue are aware, the condition does not happen overnight. Nor do the myriad different symptoms that may be indicators of the condition. More often than not, the efforts of conventional medicine look at addressing each of the different symptoms you may be suffering from individually, instead of looking for the single cause that presents itself as this diffuse range of symptoms. More often than note, those with this condition look at alternative forms of adrenal fatigue treatment in an effort to get healthy once more.

Adrenal Fatigue – The Medical Discrepancy

Although adrenal fatigue has been recognized as being a distinct clinical syndrome for many years, the majority of healthcare professionals are not really familiar with the condition. This is largely due to blood tests not showing an actual result for the condition, as they tend to look for certain specific markers in order to identify a specific condition. Traditional tests are not able to do this in the case of adrenal fatigue. In many instances, those with adrenal fatigue see their blood tests fall within the normal ranges when tested. Yet there is no argument that ‘something’ is wrong. This makes treatment for adrenal fatigue extremely difficult. Besides this, adrenal fatigue symptoms and treatment varies from one person to the next, simply because there are different stages of the condition, symptoms from person to another varies, and the root cause in each person may differ.

As far a western medicine is concerned, medical treatment for adrenal fatigue is, basically, non-existent. In fact, the condition is not even recognized.

Two tests that use surrogate markers for adrenal function check on cortisol and DHEA by serum. They allow you to determine whether your body is either in an anabolic state (building up) or catabolic state (breaking down). They are, however, not true diagnostic tests. Another test for adrenal health is a saliva test that measures the levels of the adrenal hormones. The results of this test also do not allow for a determined diagnosis. Using several different testing methods, however, would enable to give an indication as to whether you may be an adrenal fatigue candidate. Due to the subclinical nature of the condition, however, these tests, in conjunction with symptomatic evidence, gives you the best indication as to whether you are dealing with adrenal fatigue or not. At the end of the day, adrenal fatigue symptoms and treatment thereof largely depends on the stage of the condition.

One has to be cognizant of the fact that your hormone levels may fluctuate throughout the day, so the time of day tests are carried out may cause a variation in results. Any medical treatment for adrenal fatigue would need to bear this in mind. Adrenal fatigue treatment would also need to be in keeping with your particular stage of the condition.

The earlier stages of adrenal fatigue see a marked rise in cortisol levels, often resulting in a hormonal imbalance skewed in favor of cortisol. The latter stages of the condition see the reverse, i.e. very low cortisol levels. This means that any medical treatment for adrenal fatigue would need to change as well in order to compensate.

As for medications targeted at adrenal fatigue, especially when self-medicating, a number of paradoxical reactions may occur – usually because all combined factors are not taken into consideration. Some of these reactions include:

· Feeling even more fatigued
· Increase in anxiety
· Heart palpitations
· Dizziness or lightheadedness
· Brain Fog
· Sleeping problems
· Going into an adrenal crash after self-medicating

The list is long, and many of these reactions may add to or increase the symptoms you already have. This reaction may be due to a neuroendometabolic (NEM) stress response which is no in a state of homeostasis. Medicating when it comes to adrenal fatigue should thus only be a consideration with the guidance of an experienced healthcare practitioner well-versed in adrenal fatigue symptoms and treatment.

Adrenal Fatigue Treatment – A Holistic Solution

Those with adrenal fatigue may have myriad symptoms – with no two people’s being the same.

There is, in women, a strong relationship between ovarian, adrenal, and thyroid health because these organs are co-dependent on each other. This is often referred to as the Ovarian, Adrenal, and Thyroid (OAT) axis. If taking medication for the thyroid, for example, it may influence the ovarian cycle and thus ultimately impact the adrenal glands. The same goes for medication with regards to the adrenals or ovaries having an effect on the other two. This is, essentially, because the OAT axis, in essence, makes use of and produce hormones that work in conjunction with each other. In other words, anything that affects one ultimately affects all three. Treatment should thus take this into consideration or you end up with a hormonal imbalance – one of the most marked symptoms of adrenal fatigue.

A more holistic approach that takes into account that each part of the body has a marked influence on the performance of the entire organism thus makes sense when it comes to adrenal fatigue treatment.

Solving Adrenal Fatigue

Nobody developed adrenal fatigue overnight. In fact, it takes a long time before your adrenal glands finally decide to pack it in. So, although healing is entirely possible, it will take some time before your adrenal glands (and the other impacted functions) return to normal. But there is something anyone can start doing

· Get rid of or solve the mental stress – whether monetary, work-related or personal.
· Get enough sleep – Try for eight hours a night at least.
· Avoid the stimulants – caffeinated beverages stimulate the mind (and body) and interrupt your sleep pattern.

· Avoid electromagnetic exposure – All electrical appliances give off electromagnetic waves. These may prevent your melatonin levels from increasing for sleep. Turn off electrical appliances before going to bed, and keep them away from your sleeping space.

· Get some exercise – This does not imply you should train for a marathon. In fact, over-exercising is just as bad for someone with adrenal fatigue as too little. Gentle exercise like walking (the dog, who will be grateful), gentle aerobics, or yoga are great. Not only will you tone muscles, but this kind of exercise reduces depression, normalizes cortisol, insulin, thyroid, blood glucose, and growth hormone levels as well.

· Make dietary changes – A life of takeout may be convenient, but the additives and preservatives cause a toxic buildup on the one hand, while your body does not get the necessary nutrients needed to restore adrenal (and other) health. The adrenal fatigue diet does wonder in this regard.

· Supplements – There are a wealth of supplements that may be of benefit for someone with adrenal fatigue. Before jumping on the bandwagon and getting everything out there, however, do consider consulting a qualified healthcare practitioner first. This will allow you to ascertain exactly what supplement you may need for your particular stage of adrenal fatigue and its corresponding symptoms.

Irene Colling Boshoff is an ex-educator turned writer. Her interest in the natural health field, more especially adrenal health, came about after a two-year stint battling depression. Becoming addicted to the medication she was on at the time, Irene started exploring the reason for her condition, realizing adrenal fatigue, was, to a large extent, the underlying cause and acted on it. She has been off medication for 14 years.

Adrenal fatigue treatment does not have a one-size-fits-all solution. There are very many factors to take into consideration. In order to undertake the long journey to recovery, you need to look at all aspects of your health, as the medical field has no easy solution to the problem. You cannot overcome this condition by popping a few pills, but instead, need to make some real changes to your lifestyle and other habits.

The Effective Natural Digestive Health Supplement

Reading Time: 2 minutes

There are a lot of digestive health supplements on the market today, and it can be overwhelming to try and dig through the shelves of bile tablets, flax seed liquid, and probiotic yogurts. To understand how to choose a digestive supplement, it helps to know a little bit about digestion. The purpose of digestion is to provide the body with those things it can’t manufacture on its own, like certain vitamins, proteins, and all minerals. A properly functioning digestive system has appropriate enzyme levels, low levels of bad bacteria, and a good population of healthy gut flora.

Digestive Health

Better Absorption of Minerals

Intact Digest with Nutri-Mastic is highly ionic and highly photonic which translates into greater absorption of essential minerals. A good digestive supplement will not only support your digestive flora but also provide the minerals your body needs to function and digest food properly.
